Current (no 2),
3 Channel video with sound, 2014.
Current is a three-channel video work that traces the movement of voice through water, an exploration of resonance, distance, and the fragility between sender and receiver.
In collaboration with an award-winning soprano opera singer, Alexandra Ioan, I built a custom underwater sound system to carry her live performance from the gallery space into the open sea. As her voice filled the room, it also travelled into the deep waters of the Bass Strait, where I floated alone on the surface, ears submerged and listening.
What reached me was not the voice as it left her lungs, but something altered: softened, stretched, broken into waves. This work is a meditation on how sound transforms when it leaves the air and enters water, how it dissolves, scatters, and reforms in new and unexpected ways.
Current is about connection across distance, about what is lost and what is made in the space between. It is both a technical experiment and an intimate ritual of listening, one body sending, another receiving, with the sea holding everything in between.
